Many writing apps are built for one operating system. If you write on Windows at home and a Mac at work, or run Linux, platform support narrows your choices quickly.
Before you choose
- List every device you write on now and in the next few years
- Check offline support: browser tools need a connection, desktop apps do not
- Check how files are stored: plain local files move between computers more easily than a private cloud database
- Check mobile if you want to write on a phone or tablet
Windows
Windows has the widest range of novel-writing software, from word processors to dedicated fiction apps. Quillen runs on Windows 10 and 11 with an installer download.
macOS
Mac users have both cross-platform apps and Apple-only ones. If you choose an Apple-only app, remember it will not follow you to a Windows or Linux machine. Quillen runs on macOS as a native download.
Linux
Linux is the least served platform. Quillen offers a Linux build, which makes it one of the few commercial fiction writing apps that does. Browser-based tools are another option.

Moving between systems
Quillen stores each book as plain files in your Documents folder. If you already sync Documents with OneDrive, iCloud Drive or Dropbox, your books follow you automatically between computers. There is no Quillen account or cloud service involved. Read Local-First Software, Explained for Writers for more.
What Quillen does not do
Quillen is a desktop app. It does not have a mobile version and does not offer real-time collaboration. If you need to write on a phone, pair it with a simple notes app for ideas and bring them into Quillen later.
Common questions
Does Quillen work on Mac, Windows and Linux?
Yes. Quillen is available as a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, and works fully offline on all three.
Is there a good writing app for Linux?
Options for Linux are fewer. Quillen and a few open-source tools run natively. Browser-based tools also work on any system.
Do Apple-only writing apps work on Windows?
No. Some writing apps are exclusive to Apple devices, so check platform support first if you might switch computers.
